Satellite imagery and capacity estimates indicate China is expanding its centrifuge enrichment complex near Emeishan in Sichuan Province, a facility likely being used to produce weapon-grade highly enriched uranium (HEU) and potentially ending a nearly four-decade pause on fissile material production. Commercial satellite data from April 2026 reveals a newly completed fourth centrifuge plant at the site. Once operational, the addition will bring Emeishan's enrichment capacity to roughly two and a half times its 2022 level. Because China's civilian nuclear reactor fleet can be fully fueled without the facility, the rapid buildout suggests the output is intended for the country's accelerating nuclear weapons buildup
